Viewing RSS Feeds
User Profile: Muji, Age 28
Muji uses MediaTicker to receive his RSS feeds because he loves how MediaTicker displays them in picture format. Muji loads up his ticker with all sorts of streams – national and international news from Yahoo, his friend’s Flickr feeds, his favorite cartoon strips "Dilbert"and "Peanuts"– even his daily horoscope. Sadly, this doesn’t encourage Muji to get much work done – he’s always clicking on his ticker when he should be writing reports for his boss! And he wouldn’t have it any other way...
With MediaTicker 2 you can add RSS feeds from almost any source. An RSS feed is a simple system that allows users to subscribe to content on their favorite websites. MediaTicker displays the images found in many RSS feeds - mousing over the image shows the source and headline for the story and clicking on the image will take you to the feed’s website so you can read the article in full. MediaTicker also supports text-based RSS feeds by displaying hyperlinked headlines along with a snapshot of the originating website.
Manually Adding New RSS Feeds to MediaTicker:
As well as your own pictures, you can add RSS feeds to MediaTicker. Text-based RSS feeds will show up as two adjacent thumbnails: one showing a snapshot of the originating website, and the other displaying the top 5 headlines from the site:
- Launch MediaTicker 2
- Right-click anywhere on the ticker and select "Options…". The Options window appears.
- Select the "Sources" tab in the Options window.
- Select "RSS Feeds" from the popup menu at the top of the window.
- Type the URL of the feed you wish to add.
- Click the "Add Feed" button. MediaTicker verifies that the feed is compliant and adds it to the RSS Feeds list.
- Click "OK" in the Options window.
MediaTicker will now poll the feed for content and display it in the ticker.
Adding New RSS Feeds Using the MediaTicker Website:
A common question from our MediaTicker 2 beta testers was "where can I find RSS feeds to add to my ticker?"Roxio Labs has trawled back and forth across the web, searching for fun and interesting feeds on everything from top YouTube videos to international politics. You can browse our list here.
Each feed has an "Add to MyRoxio"button:
Click this to automatically add the feed to MediaTicker!
RSS feeds with thumbnails
Many RSS feeds include media thumbnails – scaled versions of a larger image that might accompany a news article. For example, a news story about "storms in New England" might include a picture of damaged buildings and downed trees. Unlike other RSS readers, MediaTicker displays these thumbnail images, making reading the news fun again!
Just click on any media thumbnail to be taken to the website of the originating news story:
RSS feeds without thumbnails
Some RSS feeds don’t include images as part of the feed. MediaTicker displays these kinds of feeds slightly differently; a snapshot is displayed in the ticker, along with the text headlines. Clicking on a headline will take you to the full story on the web:
